NOLAN SMOCK

My first photo series made after a decade away from visual art follows a 2011-2016 homicide map of Durham, NC found online. The resulting photographs re-interpret professional and textbook guidelines for criminal forensic photography and depicts locations that are and aren’t on the map without context and littered with visual clues, making each image somewhat ambiguous. Originally printed over three self-published zines, Durham Memorial Gardens (2017-2018) is an uncertain look at a city on the brink of major change and my first in many attempts to blend documentary and fine art photography to engage with a place by working under a larger research-based and conceptual framework.
