NOLAN SMOCK

Streetview (2017) is a collection of screenshots I made just prior to using the camera again, a subconcious first move back into making visual art. In 2009, photographers started using the service as a way to explore the medium, myself included, so I picked up where I left off at. A tech monolith was getting closer to the truth of the built environment investigated by the New Topographers despite putting a greater distance (physically and emotionally) between the viewer and subjects than traditional photography. The ethics of street, travel, and documentary photographic practices grow murkier in this context while the images grow in scope.
